You’ve been applying and applying and you’ve finally landed an interview. Congrats!
But now what?
A job interview is an opportunity to emphasize on the impression your resume and credentials have already started. A time to really show who you are and what you’re capable of. Job Interview Coaching is a key aspect of the Know You Project process, because it is where we get to take all the information and insights learned and put them to practice.
Below are some tips to calm the nerves and make sure you’re prepared to give a great first impression.
- Do your research. Learn as much as you can about the company hiring for the position. Reviewing the organization’s website will help. Do they publically release an annual report? If so, skim through it. What are their pillars? How did they get their start? If you know someone at the company already, reach out and ask for their insights on how you can be best prepared for the way they conduct interviews and any additional resources to review.
- Have a list of questions ready. The interview is not just for the employer to see if you’re a good fit. It’s also for you to determine if this position/company is right for you. Prepare a list of questions of what’s important to you. This should be done in a notebook, not a phone or tablet. Some examples, “What is the pay range for this position? How would you describe the company culture? How long does an individual usually stay in this position? Is there opportunity for upward mobility?” If something piqued your interest while reviewing their annual report, ask about it! Make a list of at least five questions, but put a star next to your top two or three so you know where to go if is limited time.
- Beware of filler words. Instead of using words such as “um” or “like” when beginning to answer a question, pause and take a breath. This gives you a moment to think about your answer and calm the nervous system, stopping the filler words before they start.
- Dress to Impress. Whether your interview is in person or over video, you want to be dressed appropriately. Think blazers, suits, dresses, dress pants, and dress blouses/shirts. You can still show your style and creativity, but avoid busy patterns, neon colors and heavy makeup. Appearance is the first thing that is noticed, and that includes body language. Remember: the way you carry yourself communicates more than you might think.
